Liposuction

Liposuction in Honolulu, HI
Liposuction in Honolulu, HI

Liposuction is one of the most frequently performed procedures. Localized fat pockets, resistant to exercise and diet, can be eliminated. The areas of the body of such accumulated fat pockets often include the hips, thighs, abdomen, neck , arms, and breasts. The best candidates are near normal weight people with elastic skin who desire an improved contour change.

This procedure is usually performed under general or local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The incisions are placed in specific areas to provide the optimal contouring and aesthetic result. A fitted compression garment will be worn for about 3 to 4 weeks. Activity may be resumed in about 3 weeks and the final results will be apparent in about 3 months.

Is liposuction right for you?

Dieting and exercising can help you shed unwanted pounds, but after you lose weight, stubborn areas of fat can remain. Liposuction treatment targets and removes fat deposits and offers an effective way to contour your body.

Although liposuction removes fat, it isn't a weight loss tool. It is usually only performed if you are within 30 percent of your goal weight. Skin elasticity is an important consideration when you're contemplating liposuction treatment. If your skin isn't firm and elastic, it will sag when the fat deposits are removed.

Before treating you, your doctor will want to make sure that you are in good health. Liposuction isn't a good choice if you have diabetes, heart or lung disease, lupus or other diseases. It's also not recommended for smokers because smoking decreases the blood supply to your skin and can affect healing. Liposuction can offer dramatic results, but it's important to have realistic expectations before you undergo treatment.

What areas of the body does liposuction target?

Liposuction is used to remove fat deposits in:

  • Upper arms
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Neck
  • Abdomen
  • Waist
  • Knee

How is liposuction performed?

After you receive local or general anesthetic, your plastic surgeon makes a small incision in the area to be treated. Several incisions will be made if multiple areas will be treated. A hollow tube inserted into the incision loosens fat deposits. Once they're loosened, a surgical vacuum removes them from your body.

After your procedure, you may notice some stiffness, pain, bruising, swelling, bleeding and numbness. Prescription pain medication will help you feel more comfortable during the first few days after the procedure. Although it takes about a week for the stitches to dissolve, most people can return to work several days after liposuction treatment.

Thanks to liposuction, there's no longer any reason to feel embarrassed about your body. Call CdR Plastic Surgery in Honolulu, HI at (808) 525-6590 to schedule a liposuction consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Carl de los Reyes.
