Patients with very large and heavy breasts often experience back, neck, and shoulder pain which may interfere with their daily activities. For these patients, a breast reduction may be a medical necessity. With this procedure, a more attractive contour can be obtained with smaller, lighter, and lifted breasts.
The procedure is done under general anesthesia and usually same-day surgery. There will be incisions around the nipple, extending vertically to the fold of the breast and along the breast fold. Liposuction may be needed near the armpits to help with the contour.
The patient may have a supportive dressing initially. The scars will fade tremendously over the following year.
